Heck yes it's baseball season! Let's get ready for the Draft...
Start with the basics.
Take a quick look at the settings page of your league.
Things to look at:
Get a draft guide.
I used to start searching in December for Fantasy Baseball magazines at gas stations. It’s still fun to buy those, but don’t be that guy. That info is outdated the day it is printed. Use a Draft Kit on a website or an app. I use Rotowire’s iPad Draft Kit (also works on iPhone), and it's amazing. It updates the rankings every day (you can also edit your own rankings).
If you don’t have an iPad, don’t worry. My other go to is printing a cheat sheet off. You want an updated cheat sheet though, not an old magazine. Now, most fantasy players will go to ESPN and print one off. I like to do this only to gauge where players will be drafted. Instead, Create a cheat sheet at FantasyPros. You can pick from the most accurate experts last year.
Use Fangraphs and the player profile from Rotowire to look at players and make your own decisions. Then change rankings as you see fit.
This is fun since you can literally do it anywhere now! You used to have to be at a computer, on ESPN. Yahoo has made amazing progress in their mock drafts. But there are also apps that you can do it from now. The Rotowire Draft Kit app, ESPN and Yahoo Fantasy apps all have mock draft capabilities. Draft waiting in line! Draft from work! Draft on your shitty Tinder date! Practice taking pitchers early, or all hitters early. See what your team ends up like.
Alright, Christmas is here! It’s Draft Day! You should be prepared by now. Wake up, check some player news, and then get out of your head! Half of my league likes to go golfing before any draft we have. I always try to get the guys good and drunk on the course to make crappy decisions come draft time… it usually backfires. But have fun and make a day out of it!
Find your favorite way to draft. Whether it’s a single printed out cheat sheet, or a draft app.
Focus, have fun, make side bets!
Good luck this season boys and girls. Check out the course on How to Make a Fantasy Baseball Spreadsheet for all you interested in Daily Fantasy.
